Christmas MDF with added Sparkle and Polar Friends!

Hello all! It's December and the mince pies are looking tempting! This week I am playing with MDF and adding some characters from the Hobby Art Poles Apart Set.

I started with one of the fabulous Imagination Crafts MDF Words. These all have pre-drilled holes in for hanging, but you don't have to use them all, or even any! You can also hang things from them, or even hang several words together to make some very funky Christmas word decorations.

Step one was to paint some Sax Blue Imagination Crafts Starlight Paint directly onto the MDF. There was no need to prime with gesso, as the paint is dark and highly pigmented.

Next, I chose some of the characters I wanted to add to my piece from the Hobby Art Poles Apart Set. I stamped with Memento Black Ink and coloured with Spectrum Noir Pencils.

My first attempt at the polar bear I did not like, so I practised and was happy with number two image below (I realise my colouring is not great: I'm learning!):

With my MDF dry, I added some Imagination Crafts Diamond Sparkle Medium all over the front of my word. I had to do this in stages with a snowflake stencil, waiting for each layer to dry before doing the next. I also painted a small snowflake with Platinum Starlight Paint and stippled more of the Sparkle Medium all over this with my finger.

To add some more dimension to my piece I used lots of Diamond Sparkle Medium to create a melted snow look. I put large blobs of the gel at the top and on the letters where 'snow' would fall naturally. I then used a spatula to pull the medium into 'drips'. Once all the bits and bobs were dry I assembled my piece.

I think daddy (or mummy) polar looks quite calm and ready for Christmas, don't you?! Not sure that's going to me this year, but hear's hoping!

See you next week with some different samples relating to tomorrow's class topics...

Lots of love,

Martina

    1. I suspended the snowflake using clear jewellery making thread and attached to the back of the letter. I covered the thread at the back xx
